A Cozy, Boho Master Bedroom Refresh
I recently participated as a guest in the One Room Challenge, which is a bi-annual event hosted by Better Homes and Gardens. During the event, participants endeavour to transform one space in their home in just six weeks with the encouragement of fellow participants. This was the first time I took part, and the room I tackled during this challenge was my master bedroom. It wasn't a massive overhaul, but more of an update. The space was in need of some personality and warmth. Scroll through to see the final room, as well as some before-and-after photos!
BEFORE + AFTERS
We got this dresser for free, and I painted it grey and swapped out the hardware years ago. It was too dark and didn't feel right in the space, so I sanded off the paint on the top two drawers and put on a coat of beeswax. Then, I painted the rest of the dresser with a cabinet coat paint from Behr Paint. I also swapped out the chrome hardware with some blush leather pulls with gold nail details. The changes were very simple (an afternoon of minimal effort) but hold big impact.
The Window Wall:
There really were no major changes here other than paint colour and a new pair of linen curtains from Urban Outfitters. I think switching out the curtains to something a bit softer really added some warmth to the space (and allows in a bit more light, which I love!).
The Headboard + Feature Wall:
I was once told "don't ever create a feature or accent wall unless you have something to accent." Well, once we pulled out the old, bulky wooden headboard, I thought it was the perfect opportunity to create some details on this wall. We added this very simple faux board and batten with about $15 worth of mdf from Home Depot (the same mdf we used to update the baseboards). I painted it with Behr Paint's Polar Bear White, and then painted the top 1/3 with Behr Paint Cider Spice. I also added some very simple gold leaf details on the Cider Spice, but it really hard to capture them on film!
I love the addition of an area rug to this space. I don't know why I waited so long to put one in here, but I'm glad I did because this gorgeous piece from Mohawk Home (available at Lowe's, see links at bottom of this post!) fits perfectly in the space. There's something so nice about stepping onto a soft, plush rug when you wake up in the morning compared to a cold, wood floor. It softens up the space so much, and makes it feel cozy and warm. I'm in love.
The decor in the room is mostly items we already had, such as the large oval mirror and macrame pieces. The only purchased decor items were the bedding pieces. Adding cozy layers and different textures also helped to create that cozy, warm vibe we were after.
